np. 織田哲郎 – 翼を広げて (DEEN-cover)
I don’t normally write about 倖田來未 [Koda Kumi] unless it’s about charts, but since people over @ JDF freaked out after some misinterpretations, I don’t think it’ll hurt if I post this here too.
Follow up for clarifications etc.
倖田來未 [Koda Kumi] has been one of the most successful Japanese female solo-artists during the last few years.

To put it short, earlier this week in a radio-show ‘All Night Nippon’ (which is the most popular radio-show in whole Japan) she insulted all Japanese women that are older than 35, saying that after reaching that age the “amnionic fluids get rotten and you become dirty”. That is a rough translation from the clip, but pretty clear for it’s message.
When now some western people might think that “what’s the big deal? Bet everyone in America has said something even worse than that.”, that is beside the point.
This is Japan we’re talking about and Japanese women are very touchy about the subject. And she just basically told everyone over 35 that they are something dirty. Not to even mention the issue about Japanese women + career&family.
From the tape you can clearly hear that she didn’t actually mean this to come out the way it did. She is just big-mouthed and the kansai-ben (a “rough” dialect) she uses is definetely not helping the case.
That, however, is no excuse.
It was very wrong and extremely careless of Koda to say anything like that, and it’s even worse when she is mostly an idol of young girls. In Japan, an idol is an idol and negative comments and/or attitude do not lead to anything good.
She released her album ‘Kingdom’ just a few days ago, having gained the following, respectable sales ‘to-date:
84,116 + 61,034 + 38,530 + 23,486 (x1.7) = 352,182.
Sales-drop is expectable for today’s numbers that will come out tomorrow, since this was in the news yesterday-evening.
Also, her company Avex panicked and to avoid anyone questioning Koda about the matter (and to show the public that they’re punishing Koda from her actions), they’ve called off all promotion of the album. Also a few of Koda’s projects (f.e. with Visée, a make-up-company) have been erased.
I don’t know how this “temporary suspension” of Koda will come out. At the moment there are rumours of her 2008-tour to be cancelled, but on the other hand.. there are always rumours in the J-ent-world.
The official apologies on her minimal-made Official homepage.

To an article about the case (in Japanese, no new info provided) on Sanspo.

Wow… Cutting promotion on an album is a big damn deal… Too bad for her though… I hope she can pick herself up and dust off…

Well, actually the promotion for ‘Kingdom’ is already pretty much done (in Japan the massive album-promotion is done the week before and the few days after the actual release), so apart from backing off from a few TV-appearances this is not so catastrophical.
The more concerning thing in regards of her career is the negative press she’s getting for this now.
The saying “no publicity is bad publicity” doesn’t cover Japan, since there the image of the artist (or any celebrity) is ‘A and O’.
Well, the weekly sales will show what kind of an effect this has had. Kingdom has sold fairly well already.
Koda deems to be taking about a month’s hiatus. I guess the final outcome depends on how ‘Kingdom’ does on the charts.
Comment by aleyna333 February 3, 2008 @ 12:41 amMan I can’t believe all that. I wish she didn’t do that.
Comment by diegwa February 3, 2008 @ 2:20 amWikipedia already reporting an estimate of just over 500,000 copies sold. About the same as Black Cherry, but, because of this, we may find it won’t sell nearly as well as Black Cherry did staying at number 1 for four weeks straight…
Comment by vinyabarion February 3, 2008 @ 6:22 amThis far we only have the Oricon-points that I’ve counted out in the original post here.
I checked wikipedia and whoever has edited the numbers there, is lost in the woods. The correct estimated sales for the past four days are
84,116 + 61,034 + 38,530 + 23,486 (x1.7) = 352,182.
So they haven’t even counted the points out for the first day, and the 4-day-figure is totally outrageous
Wikipedia shouldn’t be relied too much since anyone can register and edit the figures. The fake-info is usually corrected when the weekly official is out though.
I find it hard to beliebe Kingdom would have reached BC-numbers anyway (that album having massive success-singles, Kingdom doesn’t), seeing how the figures of the first days were. And now it seems that maybe even the 390k-mark I predicted from the start for the weekend (450k for the 1st week) will be hard to reach if this issue is going to slow the sales down.
Well, that will be clear next Tuesday when the real numbers are out.
Comment by aleyna333 February 3, 2008 @ 6:55 amI don’t think that Kingdom will do as well as Black Cherry the singles weren’t as good and the album itself wasn’t as good.
Comment by diegwa February 3, 2008 @ 11:19 pmWell that shows you that famous people doesn’t think before saying something, That comment was really Stupid and ofensive. It seems that she is not aware that she use to be a roll model. Now time well tell. will the Japanses forgive her???
Comment by larkgirl May 31, 2008 @ 3:36 pmThank you for the info!
She looks vulgar, arrogant, a pale copy of Hamasaki and is hurting people over 35… lame
